What I Would Tell Maddy

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Maddy,

You can walk the runway, you can scale the wall, Maddy there is nothing you cannot do because I believe in you. Who is Maddy, well she is a very special young girl, but she is as much each of you.

Because, you, Can be anything you wish, at night when you dream; imagine you burst into stars, possibilities endless, Maddy.

And right now you’re only seven, and I have been around just a tad longer; there is so much I have to tell you,

Firstly; it will be hard, I would be lying, if I said otherwise; but Maddy you can do anything, I would be lying if I said otherwise.

Maddy, what is next; simply search for people who believe in the same things as you, cooking, soccer; because if they love, what you love; then nothing else matters. If you smile, to everyone that happiness will radiate like sunbeams, because it would be impossible for anyone not to love you.

You’re a bright, tough cookie; you have no idea how much we all believe in you! Maddy, what else would I tell you well I’m glad you asked…

You can build castles out of the bricks to which you may be thrown, you can build strength from every step you take, anyone who says the opposite? Anyone who doesn’t believe in that, show them your castle once its built, smile at them and walk tall, because you can. You can. There is no question.

When I was your age, I was exactly where you were; when I was your age, I wondered why sometimes things happened to me that didn’t happen to other people, I wondered but I don’t anymore. Because I know, that everything I have gone through comes back to people like you, I am this way because I am meant to help you.

I am meant to buy you hot chocolate, I am meant to put my name against organisations with pride because we must empower other people.  I didn’t have anyone like me, to talk to when I was your age, but if you need me I am here. Because sometimes you might wonder too, you might wonder why and let me tell you. Your purpose is as big as the sky and at night you’ll break into stars, shine like diamonds and dreams will reflect.

One day those dreams will be real, Maddy that is what I must tell you. Dream. Those dreams will be real, but not without hard work, not without strength – you have more strength within you than comprehensible so dream, and dream some more. If you believe they’ll be the truth, no obstacle will break you. Because you, Break into stars.

I want, to put my name against organisations, I want to create my own, I want so much out of my life and I hope you know, it is so you can stand on my shoulders, and be empowered by what I leave. I hope you know Maddy, how capable you are; how capable you are.

Heres a few more things,

Tying your laces might me hard, don’t stop trying. If people look at you or ask you why you walk differently, just smile and say you do so because you need a little help, just like Batman needs Robin. When you face something difficult, stand tall and breathe in; because you are able. You can.

Sometimes people might think you need more help then you actually do. Sometimes people might doubt you.

To that I have one thing to say, the way you show people you are just as good as them, is you do better then them.

Not meaning that you brag; or that you be arrogant, but do better, push yourself because if they think you can’t do something show them that you can, Maddy you can.

Because the times you get the awards, or you walk up the front of the stage; all those times have nothing to do with any tangible award, they are about you, taking that moment and knowing against all odds, you made it.

Push yourself and seek higher things, because we will all be behind you; if you need us, Maddy.

Maddy, is an actual amazing little girl – but she is also a part of each of you. Break into stars, and dream, fight to make those dreams realities. Because you can. I would be lying, if I said it was easy, but nothing worth doing ever is, Maddy.

Maddy what do you want to be, because there is nothing you cannot do, friends of mine; friends just like us, they’ve climbed towers, really big ones. And you know that person who climbs the towers, that friend of mine; people told him his successes weren’t his own – they were lying. We all need help, in our own way; I need help still. So if you need help there is nothing wrong with that, your successes are your own; try your hardest.  People who are worth your time, will help you. The boy, who climbs the towers, he was once like you too, we were all little;  both of us we wondered who we’d be, we thought we’d be held back but we weren’t, we aren’t. We realised this alone, but now I can tell you – in case you ever forget, you’re amazing Maddy, you can.

People like us are made to move mountains, or climb them I guess, believe Maddy in that fact, that friend of mine, he is the kind of person who drives me, to move mountains, learn to do up buttons; I hope I can help you, I hope I can help you see through me all that you can be.

Break into, burst into, collide with, stars and dream.

You’re bright, you’re the sun. You can, Maddy.

Sometimes a chance meeting can be the start of something powerful that can change lives. I have said hi to a beautiful friendly young woman named Grace on several occasions at the Wilson Home in the last few weeks but Friday we had a chance to sit and chat whilst Maddy did Physio. It was instantly obvious after a few minutes of speaking to Grace that she was no ordinary 17 year old, no, Grace is somebody to look up to, to be inspired by, the type of young woman I want as role model for both my daughters. She writes a blog named “letterstocory” and below is a blog so beautifully written it made me laugh and cry. Oh the possibilities for Maddy and so many children in need of a mentor are endless. It’s true no mountain is too high to climb aslong as you have people in your life that believe in you, support you and give you strength to believe in yourself.
Grace you have a determination and strength that will help you to achieve your dreams and I do believe you will help others to do the same. Thank you for taking the time to tell me some of your dreams.
