I met Liam Sharma two days ago. I began a conversation with him and asked him if he’d be up for an interview, he said: “Sure” and then asked me if I was wanting to know about “Modern Manners” and the truth is, I didn’t want to know about Modern Manners, because I didn’t know what it was. I knew Liam was an artist and led an interesting life, that would make for a good story – but I didn’t realise that he was behind the highly successful clothing label, Modern Manners.
As you can imagine I was slightly embarrassed that I did not know this, but now I do and it has only made me more inspired by Liam: as a young person, with big dreams I am very much inspired by way Liam continues to move forward, as he says “Everything is moving, everything is changing, it’s all about keeping up.”
Q: When you began, what would be the highly successful brand: Modern Manners, what did you think running the company/ creating a brand would be like, and was the reality similar/dissimilar to what you thought it’d be?
When I was younger I used to have such high expectations of everything I did. I was constantly disappointed, over time I learnt to let go of things I could not directly control. I went with my gut, I went through the highs and lows of running a business for sure. I was never alone which was great. I am not sure what I thought it would be like, Modern Manners was more than I could ever imagine. I am so stoked people resonated with something I had a part in creating from the core. I’m a Leo, I don’t listen and I for sure never took a moment to doubt myself, you just gotta go get it, ya know?
Q: What’s the fashion/creative culture like in New York and what has your journey in NY been like?
NY is crazy, people ask me this all the time. New York is a collection of the most creative people in the world fighting for the same dollar. You have to find your place and become stable otherwise this city will eat you up and spit you right out. I love it, I never want to leave. Everyone is uniquely themselves, reflecting their fashion choices, like yeah every major brand is involved in New York in some way shape or form but it doesn’t necessarily reflect the street style. I think anyway.
Q: Describe your ideal day in NYC?
I am a model agent for City Models, our team works hard because we love what we do. I have learnt so much, I am so grateful to be part of such an awesome growing company. Sometimes after light, I become a twenty-something-year-old night crawler, my ideal day means no day is the same.
