I met Abby a designer of Maaike through the #GirlsInBuisness group on Facebook, run by Iyia Liu. I had a quick chat with both designers of Maaike about their brand, what makes them stand out, and their hopes for the future.
Spoiler alert: they’re TOTAL girlbosses’
Can you tell me a little bit about yourselves and how your brand ‘Maaike’ came about?
Designers Abby and Emilie are both born and bred South Islanders and met in Auckland in a workroom where they worked together for two years. After much discussion and planning, they embarked on their own brand and Maaike was born 7 years ago.
How would you say ‘Maaike’ separates itself from other online retailers?
Maaike separates itself from other brands with their bold and graphic use of print, working closely with their graphic designer Jess Moore from Scizzorface from the inception and having the retail shop as an extension of Maaike has allowed the brand to develop and strengthen, to take on board constant feedback from customers about their wants and needs. [At Maaike] Trends aren’t followed and we want to design and make garments that our customers will still be wearing in 5 to 10 years.
What are your future plans and focus’ at the moment within ‘Maaike?’
Currently, we are focussing on growing in Australia as well as an exciting project in New York and also a separate business launching in September. There is also a print collaboration coming with a Chicago based nail artist for the Winter 18 collection which is being sampled at the moment. Fair to say it is an exciting time for the brand and there is also a print collaboration coming with a Chicago based nail artist for the Winter 18 collection which is being sampled at the moment.
